The TARA
project Australia is named for the female Buddha,
Tara, who is known as the Great Compassionate Mother of All Buddhas.
Through her special qualities of taking unbiased action where and
when it is needed, she is considered an abundance-giving liberator
and comforting protectress of all suffering beings.
It is our aim and motivation in establishing this organisation to
manifest such compassionate action for others.
It is our work – and
Tara’s project.

The TARA project Australia inc. is an independent,
non-profit, non-sectarian organisation based on the living
principles of Mahayana humanitarianism.
The diverse activities of
The TARA project
Australia aim to make a contribution to the mental and physical
welfare of all beings. The organisation's purpose is to explore
solutions to problems of humankind by employing the timeless wisdom
of Buddhism.
The TARA
project
organises public events and programs in Australia and overseas which promote
its objectives. It networks with other organisations which possess and
support similar aims and is supported by donations and fundraising events.
While
The TARA project
bases its work on
the principles of Buddhism, it does not preclude non-Buddhist participants
nor activities which are not Buddhist-based. Indeed, some members of the
organisation’s management committee are not practicing Buddhists and we
believe this demonstrates the universality of our work and the versatile
potential of the philosophy’s relevance in modern times.
All administration and volunteer work is carried out by volunteers. We welcome anyone with a
commitment to compassionate action to join us to help fulfil
our aims and objectives.
The Tara project
has a board agenda for
selection of projects. In Australia we provided services for
rehabilitation (such as for drug, alcohol and other forms of abuse)
and provide courses and workshops in Mindfulness meditation for
corporations, small business and groups.
Internationally, our main areas of
focus are on animal welfare and community development in the
third-world regions of the Himalaya and India. Some of these
projects are initiated by us or are run by organisations whose aims
and motivation we support. For more details on some of these
projects see here.
Projects are focused on in ways they may be effectively monitored
and evaluated for their initial impact, long-term potential and,
where relevant, cultural appropriateness. This approach also allows
us to minimise administration and other costs.
